The Final Destination
Well, what can I say except admit how much I love this movie franchise.
No deep plotline to lose you, no complicated love story to confuse you, just sheer out and out human fodder dying in many spectacular ways. What could be better!
So what about the film itself? the fourth instalment of the FD franchise is in 3D, as are quite alot of films coming out. The 3D factor works for some films but when it doesnt, gee, can that lead to a messy hour and a half. But I remember when I first heard about this over a year ago I was excited then as I was going into the cinema to see it. Still think that £9.20 to watch a movie here in the UK is a bit steep though.
When the decision was made to produce a fourth Final Destination movie, there must have been conversations about whether the same formula would work without any reconfiguring. Audiences were pretty familiar with it by now: someone has a premonition that saves a bunch of people's lives; then Death comes back around to kill everyone anyway, in the order they'd have died in if they hadn't gotten away the first time. Someone must have asked, "Should we tweak the formula a little? Offer some kind of new angle or a surprising twist we haven't used before?" I personally dont care if they tweak it or not. Just keep the darwin death awards coming!
So, was it tweaked? Did it follow a different plotline? Didit hell! The new film, senselessly called The Final Destination, follows the formula to the letter, without deviation. You could just stay at home and watch the other three, but wheres the fun in that?, We want new people, new deaths!.
This time we're at a racetrack when Nick (Bobby Campo), a young man with no defining personality traits, has a vivid daydream about a horrific accident that kills him, his friends, and 50 or so others. Spooked, he gets out of there just before the real thing happens, saving his own life and the lives of his girlfriend, Lori (Shantel VanSanten), her best friend, Janet (Haley Webb), and Janet's preppy d-bag boyfriend Hunt (Nick Zano).who's attitude to life kinda mirrored my own as did a few things he said (Nick: "Why cant you be sensitive?" Hunt: "Tried it once, didnt work") Ok, so maybe someone will correct me on that quote but it was something like that. A security guard (Mykelti Williamson) is also spared, along with a few strays. Unfortunatly, the majority that died in his 'vision' seem to be forgotten so the chance for many more deaths was left alone.
What was the source of Nick's premonition? Not explained, or even really wondered about. Why does he continue to have premonitions detailing how the survivors will die, one by one? Also not an issue.
Maybe RiPA should call upon Richard Wiseman for advice on that?
What's important is that they do indeed die, and in the bizarre, elaborate ways that have been this franchise's hallmarks. The gimmick this time is that director David R. Ellis (Final Destination 2, Snakes on a Plane) shot it in 3D and takes every opportunity to fling gore and viscera at us. I'll admit that the 3D worked quite well as I blinked hard when a screwdriver came flying at my head. But the writer, Eric Bress (a co-writer on FD2), seems to have gotten a bit bored with the story and relied on the 3D to make up for the smoothness of the scripting.
The humour didnt really show and it just seemed to have lost the polish that the previous installments had.
But hell to that minor factor. On with the killing!
So to sum it up, The 3D works well, but I cannot say it was better than the previous chapters. It seemed that the death scenes were not as carefully planned or the after results were not a juicy as they could of been.
I say all this as someone who really loves the Final Destination films as clever, self-aware horror machines. This fourth one is strictly by-the-numbers, without a moment of genuine tension and no real surprises. Even Death himself seems a little bored with it.
Saying that, some of the visuals are very nice, Im still working out in my head if the ending wouldn've been better if th........ nah, i'll leave that one for you guys to ponder on.
Will I buy it on DVD, yeah, but I wont pay £9.20 to see it again...... but if you're looking for company, I'll join ya if you pay
